With below freezing temperatures and single-digit wind chill projected in Wednesday night’s forecast, Pearl River County officials have released information about a cold weather shelter that will be available in Waveland.
Pearl River County EOC Public Information Officer Tony Bounds said that temperatures on Wednesday night are expected to be in the lower 20s with a wind chill that could dip to nine degrees.
In preparation for these harsh conditions, Bounds said Hancock County will open a cold weather shelter at the Old Spanish Trail Baptist Church, which is located at 5078 U.S. Highway 90 in Waveland. Bounds said that he and other county officials have been in contact with Hancock County officials, and any resident of Pearl River County who needs shelter is welcome.
The cold weather shelter will be open at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7 and will close at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8. For more information about the shelter, contact Pastor Zach Cooper at 228-324-8404.
Bounds said that any other resident who needs assistance can call the Pearl River County EOC. Those who feel they are in immediate danger of freezing can also call 911 in case of an emergency.
