Mary Amato Schmidt, born January 11, 1920, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 9:05 a.m.

Beloved wife of the late Lawrence E. Schmidt Sr. Loving mother of Charlotte Schmidt Mire and the late Lawrence E. Schmidt Jr. Proud mother-in-law of Theresa LaCiura Schmidt and Jerry F. Mire. Cherished grandmother of Terri Schmidt Daroca (Charlie), Lawrence Schmidt III (Crystal), Stephanie Mire Theriot (Danny), Melanie Mire Fletcher (Christopher), Tiffanie Mire Gagliano (Vincent) and Jamie Mire Fletcher (Darryl). Great grandmother of Amanda, Brittany and Cory Doraca; Dylan and Wyatt Schmidt; Brooke and Haley de St. Germain; Noah, Jake and Jack Theroit; Tyler, Cole and Laney Fletcher; Anthony and Alyson Gagliano; and Callie, Clayton and Caydee Fletcher.

Daughter of the late Andrea Amato and Annie Nicholsi Amota Lorio.  Sister of Josephine Galviano and the late James Amato. Step-sister of the late Frances Gordon, Catherine Cardona and Sam Lorio. Also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schmidt was an employee of Maison Blanche on Canal Street for 42 years and Holmes on Canal Street for 5 years. She was a member of AARP, Prince of Peace Eucharistic Minister and other organizations of St. Bernard Parish.

She was a native of Independence, La. and a resident of St. Bernard Parish since 1957. She was a resident of Picayune, Miss., for the last 14 years.

She was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Picayune for the last 14 years. She was a resident of Covenant Health and Rehab of Picayune since February 2008.

Mary will be sadly missed by everyone, she was always smiling and happy to help anyone.

Relatives and friends attended a visitation at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial followed with Internment in the St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, masses preferred.
