Authorities in Madison County say they’re investigating the discovery of a dead infant’s body in a suitcase left behind a church.

Coroner Alex Breeland said the boy’s body was found Friday afternoon behind Smith Chapel Baptist Church on Livingston-Vernon Road near Flora. The cause of death has not been determined.

Authorities as saying an autopsy was being performed.

Breeland says people working in a yard found the suitcase and reported it to the sheriff’s department. Breeland says he doesn’t know how long the child had been dead or the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

No one with the church, located about two miles from U.S. 49, could be reached for comment.
