Meridian police have charged a man serving a rape sentence with the 2002 murder of Michael Drake, who was gunned down outside a building.
Police Chief Benny Dubose said Willie Wright, 58, of Meridian, has been charged in Drake’s Aug. 21, 2002, slaying.
“They were friends at one point and time. There was a dispute between the two of them which we feel may have led to this crime,” Dubose said Wednesday. “We have established a motive. We have physical evidence that links Mr. Wright to the murder. We don’t feel comfortable right now releasing anything concerning the motive, but we are pretty sure we have a good case against Mr. Wright.”
Dubose said Wright is currently in prison serving time for an unrelated rape conviction.
Dubose said the case will be presented to the next Lauderdale County grand jury.
