Twelve new human cases of West Nile virus were reported Friday in six counties, according to the Mississippi Department of Health.
Three cases each were reported in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties with one each in Forrest, Lauderdale and Leflore counties.
The state’s total number of cases stands at 44, health officials said.
Interim state epidemiologist Dr. Mary Currier said Mississippians should take steps to protect themselves.
“This is peak mosquito season and everyone needs to protect themselves while they’re enjoying the outdoors this Labor Day weekend,” Currier said.
