Gulfport sweeps local teams

POPLARVILLE — Former Pearl River Community College head baseball coach Jamie McMahon enjoyed his return to campus over the weekend.

McMahon, now the head coach at Gulfport High School, brought his Admirals to the River on the final day of the annual PRCC Prep Tournament and came away with a pair of wins over two different local schools. Gulfport beat Picayune 14-3 and then whipped Poplarville 16-4.

Picayune actually jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, as Mark Wood had an RBI-single to drive in Jacob Taylor and then Kyle Dillard smacked a two run double.

Gulfport wasn't fazed, however, putting up a six spot in the second and hanging five more runs on the scoreboard in the fourth. Goose Yates ended the game in the fifth with a two run home run. Daniel Keating cracked a three-run homer in the six run second.

Tyler Breaux took the loss for the Maroon Tide.

The Admirals remained hot as the second game of the day go underway, taking a 4-0 lead over the Hornets in the top of the first.

The Hornets fought back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, as Chandler Ray led off the frame with a triple and scored on a double by Zac Houston. Drake Hodges followed with a run-scoring single, and then J.J. Welch drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

But Gulfport secured the win by sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs in the top of the second. Yates and Grant Brown each socked two-run homers for the Admirals.

Ashton Miley took the loss for the Hornets.

Poplarville faced Harrison Central in the final game of the day, and dropped an 11-1 decision to the Red Rebels.

Ray took the loss, and also had two hits and drove in the only run for the Hornets.

That  marked the third straight loss in the event for Poplarville, as the Hornets also lost to George County 11-6 Friday night in a game called after six innings due to a time limit.

Miley had two hits and drove in two runs for Poplarville, while Ray added  two hits as well. Houston smacked a double. Ray had eight hits in the four games the Hornets played in the tourney.

The Hornets will be out to end that losing streak tonight, taking on Stone County on the road. Picayune is also back in action tonight, hosting defensing Class 5A state champion Pascagoula in district action.

Pearl River Central kicked the week off for local teams, hosting Gautier in district play  Monday night. A full report on all three of these games will appear in Wednesday's edition of the Item.

  • Hood’s ‘open carry’ ruling strikes important balances

Attorney General Jim Hood’s office issued an opinion this week that went a long way toward establishing some order and applying some common sense to what has become a contentious and confusing debate both for proponents and opponents of free exercise of the Second Amendment.
House Bill 2, which becomes law July 1, was authored and led to passage by state Rep. Andy Gipson, R-Braxton. Gipson has told the press that he believed the legislation was necessary to clearly define what a concealed weapon is under the law and to distinguish between “concealed carry” and “open carry” rights. But many law enforcement officers charged with enforcing the state’s “concealed carry” law and other contradictory statutes, the bill created some confusion and Hood’s AG opinion brought some clarity to the ongoing debate.
