Lady Hornets beat Lady Tide

PICAYUNE — Poplarville beat Picayune 5-0 Monday night in prep fast-pitch softball action.

The Lady Hornets moved to 11-1 with the win, as Rachel Hickman tossed a two hit shutout and struck out 12 in earning the win. The Lady Tide dropped to 5-8 with the loss, as Bethany Crawford took the defeat.

Hickman, Hannah Herndon and Tori Fairchild each had RBI-doubles for the Lady Hornets in the winning effort, while Kristen Herndon had a run-scoring single.

Crawford and Nala Carter each had infield singles for the Lady Tide.

Picayune was coming off a pair of losses to Greene County Friday night.

The Lady Hornets, meanwhile, dropped their first game of the season over the weekend to Lake Cormorant in the Clarkdale Tournament.

Poplarville also picked up wins over Neshoba Central and Ridegeland in that tourney.

The Lady Hornets beat Neshoba Central 8-7, as Tristan Wheat blasted both a grand slam and a solo home run and picked up five RBI's in the win. The Lady Hornets also beat Richland 7-0, as Hickman struck out 15 and pitched a two hitter in the win. Kristina Pertuit and Kaitlyn Clark had two hits apiece in the win, while Alysha Ladner had a triple and Fairchild had a double.

Both Poplarville and Picayune as well as Pearl River Central are all back in action Thursday night. The Lady Hornets host Forrest County AHS in their Region 8-4A opener, while the Lady Tide travel to Long Beach. The Lady Devils host West Harrison in district game.
