PICAYUNE —
The Senior Center Hula Dancers, led by Wanda Lokelani Orr, has been active at the Senior Center for the last ten years. They will be giving back to the center by holding a benefit program titled: “A journey through Polynesia: Music, history and dance of the South Pacific. Tickets are $5 each for the performance which will be held on September 29th, at 6 p.m.
Orr and her dancers have performed all over the south for conventions and exhibitions, sharing their enthusiasm for this relatively unknown form of dance in this geographical area.
In addition to keeping the group membership up, Orr has begun a class of young girls, most of whom are ten-years-old. She holds the class at The Pines as a community service and to share her love with a younger generation.
The name of the group is The Ku'uipo (meaning “sweetheart”), and Orr says the young performers have enjoyed learning many of the cultures of the South Pacific Island, such as New Zealand, Tonga, Tahiti, Samoa, and Hawaii.
Orr says, “Both groups will be performing at the benefit for the Senior Center. We look forward to sharing our love of this culture and dance, as well as raising funds for the place that gives so much to so many. We love our Senior Center and want to do everything we can to support it and keep it going.”
“Tickets are available at the Senior Center and through the Hula Dancers. It’s going to be a great performance and you don’t want to miss it. You will leave and feel like you have been to a Polynesian island,” says Senior Center Coordinator Kathleen Penton.

The walkway is to honor local veterans.

The 10th class of Partners for Pearl River County celebrated its graduation at First Baptist Church on Friday, May 10, in the Fellowship Hall.
