PRC, Poplarville pick up wins

POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Central scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to knock off visiting Moss Point Friday night.

Lane Fazende drove in the winning run with an RBI-single for the Blue Devils, who move to 2-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Dylan Spiers went the distance on the hill to get the win. He also had three hits including a triple and drove in a pair of runs, while Christian Smith had a triple and a double and a pair of RBI's as well. Christian Travis had three hits and Caleb Morales added two hits to the winning cause.

Meanwhile, East Central sophomore pitchers Connor Pilkington and Eric Saksa combined to strike out 19 batters and allow just two hits over 12 innings as the Hornets beat homestanding Picayune 4-2 Friday night in league play.

The Hornets (6-3, 3-2) got run-scoring singles from Jesse Morrison and Justin Plummer in the top of the 12th to  pull out the win.

East Central starter Pilkington, a sophomore, allowed no hits and struck out 10 through six frames. However, Kyle Dillard greeted him with a triple to open the bottom of the seventh, and Pilkington was pulled in favor of classmate Saksa.

Saksa immediately allowed a run-scoring sacrifice fly to Peyton Lee to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into extra innings.

Picayune's Jacob Taylor allowed the Hornets just two unearned runs and only three singles through the first nine innings. He also struck out 13. Mark Wood relieved him and took the loss.

Dillard also doubled to lead off the bottom of the 12th for Picayune (2-8, 2-3), but Saksa stranded him there to end the game and pick up the win.

Also, Poplarville beat visiting Vancleave in Division 8-4A play, as Blake Ladner struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in picking up the win. Zac Houston smacked a walk off three run home run for the Hornets, who move to 7-4 overall and are 2-0 in league play.

Picayune travels to St. Stanislaus today, PRC goes to Hancock and Poplarville hosts Stone County.

A June 2011 tornado killed three people, injured 200 and damaged 1,400 buildings along a 39-mile path through Massachusetts. The recovery in the tiny town of Monson, Mass., inspired sisters Caitria and Morgan O'Neill to launch a website, Recovers.org, that hopes to streamline the process by connecting the needs of disaster victims directly with volunteers and potential donors.
