Hornets on the verge

POPLARVILLE — The Poplarville boys are on the verge of a return to the state basketball playoffs.

The Hornets picked up a huge Division 8-4A win over visiting Greene County on Senior Night Tuesday, taking a 60-48 victory.

Rojae Raine tallied 15 points to pace Poplarville, while Devin Bonner added 12 points to the winning cause and Anthony Martin chipped in 11 points.

The win pushes Poplarville to 6-3 in league play with just one district game remaining on the road at Vancleave on Friday. St. Stanislaus, which hosts Bay High on Friday, leads the league standings at 7-2, while Bay High and Poplarville are tied at 6-3.

The top two teams in the regular season standings earn first round byes in the upcoming district tournament, and four teams from the division qualify  for the south state payoffs meaning that the top two seeds from the regular season are automatically qualified for the state playoffs.

A Hornet win and a Bay Loss Friday would put Poplarville into the semifinals of the division tourney and earn them a playoff berth as well.

Poplarville swept GCHS, as the Lady Hornets picked up their first district win of the season beating the Lady Wildcats 48-44.

Also on Tuesday, Picayune's boys beat visiting Petal 63-57 to move to 17-6 on the year. Shemar Williams tallied 18 points for Picayune, while Sullivan Bell added 13 points and Eric Peyton chipped in 12 points to the winning effort.

The Lady Tide dropped a 52-37 decision to the Lady Panthers. Both Picayune teams travel to petal on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Pearl River Central was swept by visiting Forrest County AHS in a pair of games on Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils fell 59-43, despite getting 21 points from Ashton Woodson. The Lady Devils  dropped a 63-33 decision, as Claire Lumpkin scored 15 points and Jessica Powers added 10 points.

Both PRC teams travel to Petal on Friday night.
