Fourth of July celebrations spread from McNeill to Coast

McNEILL — Melvin R. Glidewell has been fire chief of the McNeill Volunteer Fire Dept. for 32 years. He attended the first meeting the department held when it was being formed in the early 1970s. He’s been a member of the department for 38 years.

He will retire on July 4. The annual July 4 McNeill Volunteer Fire Dept. celebration, which features the largest fireworks display in the county, will be held here as a farewell retirement party for Chief Glidewell.

Festivities will get underway at 11 a.m. in downtown McNeill, and there will be plenty of fish plates for sale, and gospel groups and singers will entertain all day long.

The fire works display, which is expected to be the biggest ever, will get underway when the sun goes down.

McNeill VFD member Thomas Calhoun, said, “Cuevas Fish House will be selling plates of fish and chicken for $9 per plate, beginning at 11 a.m. People need to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and prepare for the heat.”

The event is the primary fundraiser held by the department and is sponsored by HSI Ready-Mix and Deep South Fire Trucks. HRL Contractors and Rodney Dyess also pitched in to make the event happen.

Music will be provided by God Speed 3, Henley Field Pickers, Shallow Creek, Danny Roy Johnson, Hunter Williams, Tara Poolson and Kaitlin Lee, as well as others to be announced.

“The fire department would also like to thank Joey McClinton and Tim Kahl for allowing us use of the land and clearing the land,” he said.

For more information, call the MVFD at 601-798-7065.

In other festivities and programs, a flag raising will be held at 10 a.m. at the Welcome Center on the northbound side of Interstate 59 between Nicholson and Picayune.

Hotdogs and other treats will be served after the flag raising ceremony, which will be handled by veterans Frank Egger and Russell Foster.

VFW Post Commander Lionel Lee said the James L. Burge Post 3804, 421 Ridge Road, will have a “really big show” on Wednesday as they boil 200 pounds of shrimp and will have hotdogs and hamburgers and beverages on ice.

“We invite everyone to spend the Fourth with us and celebrate this great country’s birthday,” said Lee.

There will be events on Tuesday and all day Wednesday and all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast for those who don’t mind traveling a little bit.

At Ocean Springs Tuesday, this afternoon at Fort Maurepas Park a concert by Rosco Bandana will begin at 7 p.m. and fireworks display will happen as soon as it gets dark.

On Wednesday, there will be fireworks displays at Gulfport, Biloxi, Wiggins and Pascagoula.

In Gulfport, the live music begins at 5:30 p.m. in Jones Park and the fireworks finale at 8:45 p.m.

In Pascagoula, there will be an outdoor concert by Will Joiner and Cloud Nine at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m.

There will be fireworks at Biloxi and Wiggins at 9 p.m.

Biloxi’s 25-minute show will be off Deer Island and can be viewed from the Biloxi Lighthouse to the Bay Bridge.

At Flint Creek in Wiggins, the 25th annual fireworks show will be held over the lake.

Also on Wednesday, the Gulf Coast Watchers Antique Military Vehicle Club will hold its annual Fourth Convoy from Bay St. Louis Bridge to the Biloxi Bay Bridge at 10 a.m.

  • Hood’s ‘open carry’ ruling strikes important balances

Attorney General Jim Hood’s office issued an opinion this week that went a long way toward establishing some order and applying some common sense to what has become a contentious and confusing debate both for proponents and opponents of free exercise of the Second Amendment.
House Bill 2, which becomes law July 1, was authored and led to passage by state Rep. Andy Gipson, R-Braxton. Gipson has told the press that he believed the legislation was necessary to clearly define what a concealed weapon is under the law and to distinguish between “concealed carry” and “open carry” rights. But many law enforcement officers charged with enforcing the state’s “concealed carry” law and other contradictory statutes, the bill created some confusion and Hood’s AG opinion brought some clarity to the ongoing debate.
