Devils beat Tigers

MOSS POINT — On a rare visit to Moss Point, Pearl River Central maintained a grip on first place in district play Tuesday night.

Blue Devil junior southpaw Chance Putnam pitched PRC past the homestanding Tigers 9-1, as he scattered a pair of singles and allowed just one unearned run while striking out 11 in a complete game performance.

Both teams scored a run in the first, but PRC (9-4 ,5-1) scratched out solo runs in the second and fourth frames and blew a close came open with six runs in the seventh to secure the win over Moss Point (4-8, 3-3).

The win completed a sweep for the Blue Devils over the Tigers, as PRC beat Moss Point 5-4 Friday night.

Christian Travis gave PRC a quick 1-0 lead with a run scoring single in the first. Moss Point countered,  though, as Thomas Nettles got on base with a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the stanza and scored on a pair of PRC errors.

Cody Lee's RBI-single in the second put PRC ahead for good, and the Blue Devils extended the lead on a run-scoring single by Dylan Spiers in the fourth.

Moss Point starter Benny Curry, who took the loss, was relieved by Kayln Rembert in the seventh an PRC secured the win with a trio of big hits; two-run doubles by pinch-hitter Jake Schuerman and Hayden Smith and a two-run single by Christian Smith.

Putnam didn't allow another Tiger hit until the bottom of the seventh, when Abram Sipp singled.

Moss Point travels to Picayune Friday, while PRC hosts Pascagoula in a battle of top teams on the same night.

East Central beat Picayune 1-0 Tuesday night.

In other local action, Greene County beat Poplarville 3-2 in Region 8-4A play.
