Lady Wildcats split a pair

WESSON — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats split with Copiah-Lincoln’s Lady Wolfpack here Saturday, falling 1-0 in the opening game of the MACJC South Division softball doubleheader before bouncing back with a lopsided 14-3 victory in the nightcap contest.

PRCC improved to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in division play with the win, while CLCC is now 14-8 and 1-5.

Co-Lin starter Brooke Gonzales hurled a one-hitter in the first game to nab the mound win — striking out seven Lady Wildcat batters.

Things were scoreless for the first four-and-a-half frames before the Lady Wolves managed the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth.

River starter Brittany LeBlanc (6-2) out of North Vermillion High in Maurice, La., got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up six hits, striking out seven, and hitting two batters.

Chelsea Page of Petal High smacked the only base hit for Pearl River, while Missy Romero paced Copiah-Lincoln’s six-hit attack with a double and a single. Jaylee Fernandez had a run-scoring double as well.

In the nightcap, Pearl River went up 2-0 in the top of the first before Co-Lin scored its first run in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Wildcats added two in the second and a whopping seven in the third to go up 11-1, while the Lady Wolfpack scored their final two runs in the bottom of the third.

PRCC added three more in the top of the fifth before pitcher Neely McCrary blanked CLCC in the bottom of the inning to ice the win via the eight-run rule.

McCrary (3-3) went the distance, giving up a meager five hits, striking out three, and hitting a batter; while starter Meghan Johnson got the loss.

Allie Flint of Madison Central High, Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High, Kaci Lantrip of Terry High, and McCrary paced the Lady ’Cats’ 11-hit effort with two singles a piece; while Emily Jackson out of Theodore High in Mobile, Ala., homered and Hillary Dickens of Picayune High and Whitney Waits of Oak Grove High both had base hits.

PRCC and CLCC eye a South Division rematch Saturday, April 13, with a 12 noon doubleheader in Lady Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.

The Lady Wildcats return to action Tuesday when they host MACJC South Division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast in a 4 p.m. doubleheader before traveling to division foe Hinds in Raymond Saturday, March 23, for a 12 noon twin bill.
