Woodson seeks re-election

PICAYUNE — Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Election Commissioner for District 2 in Pearl River County for the past 13 years. I, Margaret Woodson, would also like to ask for your support and vote in the upcoming election on Nov. 6.

Prior to becoming the first Republican Election Commissioner in Pearl River County, District 2, I served as chairman of the Pearl River County Republican Executive Committee and worked as a poll worker during many elections. I have served as chairman of the Election Commissioners and as a director of the state Election Commissioners Association.

I am well trained in the operation of the current voting machines used by our county. I receive annual certification by the Secretary of State and the Election Commissioner Association of Mississippi consisting of continuing education, training and certification to carry out elections. I have also taught certification on a state level.

An Election Commissioner is responsible for a variety of duties. Some are: purging and revising poll books before elections, qualifying and certifying candidates, hiring and training poll workers and working closely with the Circuit Clerk. I also prepare the machines for elections by performing logic and accuracy testing, delivering machines to precincts, and certifying elections. It is also my responsibility to submit to the Secretary of State the results of an election.

At this time I would also like to say a “special thank you” to the wonderful men and women who have worked tirelessly at the polls for me. Election day is a long and tiring process and they have all worked in District 2 without complaining and have always done an excellent job in carrying out the duties of poll managers and workers.

It is and always has been my intention and first priority to see that elections are handled accurately with integrity and fairness to all.

I take the responsibility of this job very seriously and I am thankful for the support of the voters. With your permission and support I will continue to serve you to the best of my ability as “your” Election Commissioner District 2.

A June 2011 tornado killed three people, injured 200 and damaged 1,400 buildings along a 39-mile path through Massachusetts. The recovery in the tiny town of Monson, Mass., inspired sisters Caitria and Morgan O'Neill to launch a website, Recovers.org, that hopes to streamline the process by connecting the needs of disaster victims directly with volunteers and potential donors.
