Recycling program begins in Picayune

PICAYUNE — A recycling program has been set up in Picayune with a $25,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

The first recycling drop off location was established by Monday afternoon when city employees set up the mobile collection point off U.S. Highway 11 near Roseland Park Baptist Church. Residents can find the drop off point by looking for a dark blue metal recycling container located between the church and Mickey’s #1.

Residents will notice the bin has two compartments, one for paper and the other for plastics. Currently, the city can accept only plastics containing a code 1 or code 2. To determine what kind of plastic is acceptable look for a triangle on the product made up of three arrows, inside that triangle is a number.

Code 1 plastics typically include soda bottles, water, salad dressing, peanut butter and jelly jars. Code 2 items include water pipe, five-gallon buckets, milk jugs, grocery bags and some shampoo bottles. Be sure to check the code to ensure the proper plastic products are being put in for recycling.

Other recyclable materials can be brought to a central location on Stephens Street, said Special Projects Administrator Christy Goss. Those items include cardboard, aluminum, and various paper and plastics. A trailer is parked in front of the city’s maintenance building on Stephens with several marked containers.

This program is expected to make use of a baler donated to the city by Wal-Mart back in 2008. Funds to donate the baler to the city were collected during a 2007 softball tournament, and in 2009 that baler was loaned to the now defunct Picayune Industries.

Plum Creek Environmental Technologies has contracted with the city to haul away the collected recyclable material. The city will receive 50 percent of the value of the collected recyclable materials, and Plum Creek will retain the other half. Goss said in an earlier Item story on the recycling project that most of the money received by the city will be used to offset the cost of manpower involved in the program.

The recycling program does not include curbside pickup.
