Picayune beats Ocean Springs

OCEAN SPRINGS — Picayune quarterback Ben Hickman completed 27 fewer passes than did his counterpart from homestanding Ocean Springs Friday night.

But the one the Maroon Tide signal caller converted was the biggest of the game.

Hickman hit wingback Daveon Greene on a 49-yard touchdown toss with four minutes to play, securing the 10th straight win for the defending Class 5A state champions in a 35-21 road win over the Greyhounds.

With the win at Hugh Pepper Field, the Maroon Tide moves to 3-0 and will now get ready for arch-rival Pearl River Central in Friday's Region 4-5A opener. Ocean Springs, which was one of only two teams to beat Picayune last season in its march to the state crown, falls to 1-2.

"We did a lot of good things, but we sure have a lot of room for improvement," Maroon Tide veteran head coach Dodd Lee said. "They are a very good team. I think we got fatigued a little in the second half, but we made some play on both sides of the ball when we had to have them."

Picayune took a big 21-7 lead at halftime, thanks to a crushing ground attack, and led 28-14 entering the fourth quarter. But Ocean Springs quarterback Wes Windham, who guided the Greyhounds to a 17-15 win over the Maroon Tide last season, wasn't finished.

Windham, who finished the game 28-40 for 362 yards and three scoring passes, hit standout receiver Ishmael Morrow on a 9-yard scoring pass with 10:20 to play to make it 28-21.

Morrow caught 18 passes, one short of the state record, for 263 yards and all three touchdowns.

"We did all we could just to stay in this thing," Ocean Springs head coach Ryan Ross said. "I want our guys to keep their heads up and keep fighting, and I think they did that. I'm proud of our guys for doing that against a great football team."

After the Greyhounds forced Picayune to punt, the Maroon Tide defense came up with two big stops as end James Tatum sacked Windham deep in Greyhound territory to set up a short punt.

Three plays later, Hickman found Greene alone behind the Greyhound secondary to seal the win.

Then, on the ensuing OSHS possession, Picayune's Jordan Dedeaux picked off a Windham pass to send the fans to the exits.

"Ocean Springs is going to make a lot of big plays against a lot of people," Lee added. “No. 10 (Morrow) is a great football player. The quarterback is a great football player. You can't take everything away from them. We just made the plays on both sides of the ball when we needed them."

Preston Dedeaux put Picayune up 14-0 in the first half, scoring on a pair of short scoring runs. He finished the first half with 102 yards rushing, and ended the night with 151 yards.

Greene scored on an 18-yard mis-direction counter with five minutes to play before halftime, to give the Maroon Tide the 21-7 lead at intermission.

After Windham hit Morrow on a 69-yard scoring strike to make it 21-14, Picayune's Desmond Taylor put the Maroon Tide back up by two scores on a 22-yard scoring scamper with 6:39 to play in the third frame, setting up the exciting final period.

Taylor finished with 101 yards rushing in the game.

Picayune and PRC will face off for the first time ever in this football series when both teams are undefeated. The Maroon Tide has won 15 consecutive games over the Blue Devils, including last years 49-10 win in the Class 5A South State championship game.
