Childers plans to lead crop damage tour

JACKSON — U.S. Rep. Travis Childers plans to lead a crop disaster tour to highlight the scope of losses north Mississippi farmers have suffered due to late-season rains.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture official is expected on Monday’s tour, which includes a meeting with a sweet potato group in Vardaman and farmer forums in Verona and Batesville.

This tour comes amid a push by Childers and others for direct payments and other emergency assistance for affected farmers.
