NEW ALBANY, Miss. —
A citizen’s group calling itself “New Albany Spirit’ is starting a petition drive calling for an election on whether to legal sale of wine and liquor in the city.
Union County voted against legalizing liquor in 2008 and again early this year — the second time by a wider margin than the first.
A new law passed this year allows a city of more than 5,000 people to hold an election if its county has previously voted on and rejected it.
Mary Jennifer Russell, one of the group’s leaders, tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that it was only fair for lawmakers to allow cities to decide such issues independent of people who do not live in the city.
New Albany voters approved beer sales in 2010.
