HURLEY —
Pearl River Central maintained its lead in district play Friday night in prep baseball action.
The Blue Devils knocked off homestanding East Central 6-4, as Chance Putnam worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
Dylan Spiers picked up the win, before giving way to Putnam in the final frame. Spiers got PRC off to a quick start with his first career home run in the top of the first. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly later in the game.
Caleb Morales had a two run double for PRC, while Lane Fazende had three hits and also stole home. Wade Manning had a double as well as a run-scoring single in the winning effort.
The Blue Devils led 6-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, and 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. The Hornets got a pair of runs off Spiers and loaded the bases up before the southpaw Putnam came in to slam the door recording back to back strike outs and getting a pop out to end the game.
PRC is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. East Central is 1-2 in the loop.
Meanwhile, Picayune dropped a tough 4-3 loss in eight innings to homestanding Gautier Friday night. The Gators scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win.
Jacob Taylor took the tough-luck loss, despite striking out 14. Picayune fell to 1-6 overall with the loss, and 1-2 in league play. Gautier won its first game of the season, and sits 1-2 in league play as well.
Newt Brown struck out 17 in picking up the complete game win for the Gators. Taylor had two hits for Picayune and Nick Marble had a double and drove in a run as well for the Maroon Tide.
Both PRC and Picayune, as well as Poplarville, are back in action today all in doubleheaders. The Blue Devils travel to West Marion, while the Maroon Tide hosts Gulfport and the Hornets host D'Iberville.
Softball
Both Picayune and Polarville came up with shutout wins in fast-pitch softball play Thursday night.
The Lady Tide beat Pass Christian 2-0, behind the one-hit pitching of Bethany Crawford. She struck out seven and walked just two and allowed just a bunt single.
Both Tiffany Devore and Lauren Walker had two hits apiece and each drove in a run in the winning effort for the Lady Tide.
Picayune is now 3-3 on the year, and will play two games today in the Stone County Tournament facing East Central at 9 a.m., and the host Lady Tomcats at 11 a.m. Picayune will also host Greene County Monday night.
Poplarville beat that same Stone team 15-0 Thursday night, as Rachel Hickman hurled her second consecutive abbreviated no-hitter. She struck out 15 in the dominating performance as well.
Sam Gentry had a pair of hits for the Lady Hornets in the win, while Kristen Herndon smacked a home run. Tristan Wheat added a triple to the winning effort.
Poplarville played a pair of games in the Harrison central Tournament Friday. The Lady Hornets open Division 8-4A play Monday night at home against Forrest County AHS.
