FLORA — Seed giant Monsanto Co. says it began construction Tuesday on a 26,000-squate-foot, $2.4 million corn breeding station in Flora.

When complete, the facility will employ 10 full-time and up to 50 seasonal workers.

This new corn center will join the more than 50 corn breeding locations the company has worldwide.

Monsanto also has three technology research sites in Mississippi — in Scott, Leland and Winterville.

Monsanto officials say that new facility will use the latest breeding techniques to develop higher-yielding corn hybrids with greater resistance to disease and other environmental stresses, specifically adapted to the region.
