Funding drive for museum

JACKSON — The Foundation for Mississippi History hopes to raise $10 million over five years for construction of the Museum of Mississippi History.

Foundation president Luke Lampton of Magnolia says the organization wants to open the museum during the state’s yearlong celebration of its statehood bicentennial in 2017.

The money would be raised from individuals, foundations and corporations. The 2009 Legislature approved $2 million to create a building fund along with $2.2 million set aside in recent years for planning.

The entire project is estimated at $50 million.

Officials say the capital campaign’s $10 million will be used primarily for design and construction of exhibits.
