POPLARVILLE — Poplarville hung with perennial state power Hattiesburg for the first four innings of Thursday's game in the annual Hornet Invitational.
The visiting Tigers managed to shake loose in the last few innings, however, and cruise to a 17-7 win.
The loss drops the Hornets to 1-2 on the season and HHS now stands 2-1.
Hattiesburg took advantage of quite a few erros and quite a few walks issued by the Hornet hurlers in taking the win.
"We kicked the ball around way too much," second year Poplarville head coach J.J. Fortune said. "That and all the walks killed us. We just didn't play very well."
Despite the early miscues by the Hornets, the game ws tied 5-5 after three innings. Eli Frierson, Drake Hodges and Blaine Hebert all had RBI-singles for Poplarville, and Tyler Childs also drove in a run early in the game for the Hornets.
Maverick Smith also had an RBI-single for the Hornets later in the game, but the Tigers scored three runs in the fourth to take a lead they would never relinquish and then piled on nine more runs in the final three frames.
Smith took the loss for PHS, in relief of starter Jade Whitten.
Poplarville hosts Stone tonight at 6, then the Hornets meet the Tomcats again at 1 on Saturday afternoon before closing the tourney out by taking on Pearl River Central at 3:30.

Lady Tide wins district title
For the first time in six seasons, the Picayune girls are league champions on the basketball court.
The Lady Tide knocked off top-seed Long Beach 50-40 Friday night, in the Region 8-5A Tournament finals.
It was the first district title for the PMHS girls since 2006. Long Beach had beaten Picayune twice in the regular season.
"They executed everything perfectly," second year Picayune head coach Lacey Kennedy, whose team in now 22-6, said. "These girls play so hard and they do everything I ask of them. They really deserve this."

Lady Hornets upset Bay
The tallest player on the court for Poplarville came up with the biggest game Thursday night.
Bretta Hart, the Lady Hornets’ 6-foot-4 junior center, scored a game high 26 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked seven shots as Poplarville upset second seeded Bay High 43-39 in the Region 8-4A semifinals. -
Tide teams advance
Both Picayune basketball teams will be playing for Region 8-5A championships Friday night. The Lady Tide returned to the Class 5A South State playoffs for the first time in two years, thanks to a 47-40 win over West Harrison.

Season ends for PRC teams
The season came to an end for both Pearl River Central teams in the opening round of the Region 8-4A Tournament Tuesday night. The Blue Devils fought hard against top-seeded West Harrison, before coming up short in a 47-43 loss to the Hurricanes.

League tourneys set
With regular season play wrapping up over the weekend, local prep basketball teams now look forward to their respective district tournaments which begin this week.
All area teams will begin postseason play on Tuesday night, with two local teams hosting tournaments. -

Picayune sweeps Pearl River Central
Shemar Williams hit four of six free throws in the final minute and his Picayune teammates completed the task at hand as the Maroon Tide turned back Pearl River Central 70-62 on Friday night.

Green County beats Lady Hornets
A small sign in green and gold hung on the fence at the Poplarville High Stadium, reading, “We believe! Go Hornets!.”
And certainly, while a little belief can go a long way, it simply wasn’t enough for the Lady Hornets in Saturday afternoon’s semifinals of the Class 4A South State girls soccer playoffs. -
Blue Devils face forfeitures
Pearl River Central’s Boys basketball team is in the midst of one of its best seasons on the hardwood in a decade. The Blue Devils, however, face the possibility of having to forfeit many, if not all of their 15 wins.
