Lady Hornets breeze by FCAHS

POPLARVILLE — The one-two punch of Poplarville’s Miranda Fazende and Ashton Rogers proved to be to much for visiting Forrest County AHS to handle Tuesday night.

The Lady Hornet dynamic duo combined for six hits and drove in nine runs, as the defending Class 4A state champions notched their first region win of the year with a 12-0 shutout.

Poplarville is 1-1 in league play and 6-4 overall.

Fazende’s bases loaded triple in the first was the big hit in a five run opening frame, and the Lady Hornets cruised to the win.

“We got off to a quick start, and that’s always good,” Poplarville head coach Jonathan Ray said. “We took advantage of a mistake they made and capitalized on it.”

Fazende and Rogers each cracked two run doubles in a four run second, putting Poplarville ahead 9-0.

Rogers then later added a two run triple in the third as the Lady Hornets took the 12-0 lead.

Sam Gentry got the shutout win on the mound.

The Lady Hornets were coming off a 14-4 loss in Thursday’s district opener to Columbia.

“We just didn’t play well, and Columbia hit the ball really well,” Ray added. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole with that game right away in the district, but we took a step towards working our way out of it tonight. We just have to keep playing better.”

The Lady Hornets were slated to play three games in the enterprise tournament over this past weekend, but only got a portion of one game in before the event was rained out.

The Lady Hornets travel to Leakesville Thursday night for yet another league game, facing homestanding Greene County.

The Lady Wildcats beat Picayune 10-1 on Tuesday night.
