Local hoops season kicks off

PASCAGOULA — Prep basketball season kicks off this weekend.

There are six new head coaches locally, and most of them will be in action this weekend as "Classic" games take place.

Both Picayune and Pearl River Central will have a pair of new head coaches apiece this season, for both the boys and girls teams. And all four teams kick off the season Saturday in action on the road.

Both Picayune teams travel to Petal for the Petal Classic event. The Lady Tide, under the direction of a new, but former coach in Dennis Peterson, take on hattiesburg at 3:30 and the Maroon Tide takes on the Hattiesburg boys at 5:00 on the Petal High campus.

Scott Stevens is the new Maroon Tide head coach.

Both PRC teams head to Vancleave for the Vancleave Classic. The Blue Devils, under the new direction of Ronnie Bowens, take on D'Iberville at 5 p.m. That games follows the Lady Devils playing the Lady warriors at 3:30.

The new PRC girls coach is Danielle Dewitt.

Both Poplarville teams open the season next week.

Season ends for Maroon Tide
The season came to an end for the Picayune baseball team Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to homestanding Pascagoula here at Ingalls Field in the third and deciding game of the Class 5A South State championship series.

showdown today at 2 p.m., at Ingalls Field for the Class A South State
prep baseball championship and the right to play for the state title.

Poplarville's season came to and end in the Class 4A South state finals Tuesday night.
The visiting Lady Hornets fell to Newton County 10-2 in game two of the best-of-three series.

Two more wins, and Poplarville will be playing for the Class 4A state championship in fast-pitch softball.
The Lady Hornets have a chance at getting that first victory today.
