Bassfield, Mancuso win 2A title

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Josh Myers rushed for 230 yards and Bassfield High School ran over Ackerman High 27-13 to win the MHSAA Class 2A state championship game Friday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Yellowjackets (14-2) dominated the second half, scoring 20 unanswered points by gashing the Indians (15-1) with a fierce ground attack. Bassfield, which won its fourth state title, ran for 389 yards on 48 rushes. Myers scored twice during his 21-carry performance and averaged 11 yards a rush.

But the biggest play of the game may have come early in the fourth quarter from Bassfield safety Wilbur Myers.

Trailing 20-13, Ackerman marched to Bassfield’s 10-yard line. Wilbur Myers picked off Ackerman quarterback Andrew Furr in the end zone. Minutes later, Dominic Island ran in from 3 yards out to seal the deal for the Yellowjackets.
