Lady Tide drops three of four games

POPLARVILLE — After starting the season with four straight wins, Picayune dropped three of four games over the past few days in slow pitch softball.

On Saturday, the Lady Tide played three games in the Pete Jackson Tournament, falling to Petal 6-3 and Enterprise-Clarke 9-3 before beating Greene County 11-2.

Against Petal, Millie Gill, Tiffany Devore and Tee Myers had two hits apiece, while in the loss to Enterprise Bethany Crawford and Shalyn Stevens had two hits each and Sara Dodd added a double.

In the win, Devore had a big game with a triple and a pair of doubles and she drove in five runs while Dodd, Brooke Ladner and Crawford all had three hits apiece and Jennifer Walker and Jessica Rancifer had two hits each.

On Thursday, the Lady Tide dropped their first game of the season as Vancleave won 6-5 despite Hillary Dickens, Myers, Ladner and Walker all getting two hits apiece.

Dodd pitched all four games, and stands 5-3 on the year as does the Lady Tide.

Picayune hosts Petal on Tuesday.

  • Jasmine Ducre Lady Tide wins district title For the first time in six seasons, the Picayune girls are league champions on the basketball court. The Lady Tide knocked off top-seed Long Beach 50-40 Friday night, in the Region 8-5A Tournament finals. It was the first district title for the PMHS girls since 2006. Long Beach had beaten Picayune twice in the regular season. "They executed everything perfectly," second year Picayune head coach Lacey Kennedy, whose team in now 22-6, said. "These girls play so hard and they do everything I ask of them. They really deserve this."

  • Lady Hornets upset Bay

    The tallest player on the court for Poplarville came up with the biggest game Thursday night.
    Bretta Hart, the Lady Hornets’ 6-foot-4 junior center, scored a game high 26 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked seven shots as Poplarville upset second seeded Bay High 43-39 in the Region 8-4A semifinals.

  • Teela Hayes Tide teams advance

    Both Picayune basketball teams will be playing for Region 8-5A championships Friday night. The Lady Tide returned to the Class 5A South State playoffs for the first time in two years, thanks to a 47-40 win over West Harrison.

  • Season ends for PRC teams

    The season came to an end for both Pearl River Central teams in the opening round of the Region 8-4A Tournament Tuesday night. The Blue Devils fought hard against top-seeded West Harrison, before coming up short in a 47-43 loss to the Hurricanes.

    With regular season play wrapping up over the weekend, local prep basketball teams now look forward to their respective district tournaments which begin this week.
    All area teams will begin postseason play on Tuesday night, with two local teams hosting tournaments.

    And certainly, while a little belief can go a long way, it simply wasn’t enough for the Lady Hornets in Saturday afternoon’s semifinals of the Class 4A South State girls soccer playoffs.
