CARRIERE —
For the first time in six seasons, the Picayune girls are league champions on the basketball court.
The Lady Tide knocked off top-seed Long Beach 50-40 Friday night, in the Region 8-5A Tournament finals.
It was the first district title for the PMHS girls since 2006. Long Beach had beaten Picayune twice in the regular season.
"They executed everything perfectly," second year Picayune head coach Lacey Kennedy, whose team in now 22-6, said. "These girls play so hard and they do everything I ask of them. They really deserve this."
Tee Myers scored four points in the first quarter, helping the Lady Tide take a 7-5 lead after the opening period. Picayune never trailed in the game.
Clarissa Jones hit a big 3-pointer with 3:23 left in the first half, putting Picayune up 36-28. That would be the score at halftime as well.
A lay-up by Jasmine Ducre one minute into the third frame gave the Lady Tide their first double digit lead of the evening, at 38-28.
Long Beach rallied to cut the deficit to 40-35 with three minutes to play in the game, but Teela Hayes dropped in a lay-up off a feed from Ducre and then Myers hit a short jump shot to make it 44-35 with less than two minutes to play and the Lady Tide secured the win.
Myers paced Picayune in the win with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Hayes added 10 points and Ducre chipped in eight points and eight boards to the winning cause.
Kyra Williams tallied a game high 28 points for LBHS.
The Lady Tide will host McComb Monday night at 7 p.m in the opening round of the Class 5A South State playoffs.
• The Maroon Tide was not as fortunate as their female counterparts.
Picayune fell to West Harrison 69-57 in the Region 8-5A boys finals. It marked the third time this season that the Hurricanes had blown by the Maroon Tide.
Dereonte Magee nailed a 3-pointer in the waning moments of the first half, tying the game at 30-30 at halftime. The shot completed a first half comeback that saw Picayune trail by seven, at 17-10, after one quarter.
But West Harrison opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run in the first two minutes of play, to take a 42-32 lead, and Picayune never recovered.
"The third quarter killed us," second year Maroon Tide head coach Jason Kennedy said. "We didn't box out like we are supposed to, and they hurt us really bad on the offensive boards."
Maurice Stevens was a problem for Picayune all night, scoring a game high 22 points including 12 off of offensive rebounds.
Shemar Williams paced Picayune with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Eric
Payton added 10 points and Magee had nine.
The Maroon Tide, now 23-5, hit the road on Tuesday to open the Class 5A South State Playoffs against Pearl.
