PICAYUNE —
Kelly Wise Gym on the campus of Picayune High School will be the sight of the Division 8-5A basketball tournament this week.
The event will begin on Wednesday and end on Friday and will include the boys and girls teams from Picayune and Pearl River Central as well as league foes West Harrison and Long Beach also.
Wednesday’s opening round will consist of four semifinal games while Friday’s championship night will feature two title tilts.
On Wednesday, action begins at 4 p.m., with the host Picayune girls, the fourth seed, taking on the top-seed West Harrison Lady Hurricanes.
The other girls game on the opening day will pit second-seed Pearl River Central against third seed Long Beach at 7 p.m.
The winners of those two games not only earn berths in Friday’s finals but qualify for the Class 5A South State playoffs as well.
On the boys side of the ledger, the first game is set for 5:30 p.m., on Wednesday as top-seed West Harrison takes on fourth seed Long Beach.
Then, in the highly anticipated feature match-up of the opening day, host Picayune takes on arch-rival Pearl River Central in the nightcap at 8:30.
Again, the winners of those two games not only earn berths in Friday’s finals but qualify for the Class 5A South State playoffs as well.
The playoffs begin on Monday for girls and Tuesday for boys.
Also, both Poplarville teams will be in action Tuesday in the Division 8-4A Tournament in Leakesville at Greene County High. The times for those games will appear in Tuesday’s Picayune Item.
