PICAYUNE —
Stone County High School defeated Picayune with a score of 1-0 on Picayune's home turf, Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 5A South State prep soccer playoffs.
With the win the Tomcats move forward to the second round of 5A south state playoffs on Saturday against either Pearl or East Central.
The Maroon Tide, who won Division 8-5A, ends their season 12-5.
The game was tied going in to triple overtime 0-0.
Junior, Kolby Krohn, assisted with the win scoring goal in triple overtime.
Stone County’s goalie Matthew Phillips had 9 saves.
“It’s very emotional. It was a hard fought game and we were lucky to get out of here. Picayune is a classy team. They are tough and we are very fortunate,” Stone County coach Jim Risen said. “We felt like if we could get through the first round we might have a run at this thing. Our kids play tough and they never quit.”
Picayune .goalie Cesar Manjarrez had six saves.
“I think we played well. We out played them. We played down,” Picayune head coach Glenn Mitchell said. “The defender slipped and they scored a goal. You hate to see that happen, a game end that way. When you get in a situation where you don’t put it away, something dumb can happen and it did.”
In other local prep soccer action Tuesday night, Poplarville fell to West Lauderdale 12-1 in the opening round of the Class 4A South State playoffs

Saints ready to practice with Payton again

Picayune’s magical playoff run came up just short of a spot in the state finals.
Homestanding Pascagoula, the defending Class 5A state champs, took a hard-fought 5-3 win over the Maroon Tidee in game three of the best of three South State finals here Saturday before a capacity crowd at Ingalls Field. -

The season came to an end for the Picayune baseball team Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to homestanding Pascagoula here at Ingalls Field in the third and deciding game of the Class 5A South State championship series.

Picayune and Pascagoula will face off in a one game, winner take all
showdown today at 2 p.m., at Ingalls Field for the Class A South State
prep baseball championship and the right to play for the state title. -
Wildcats tring to win Region 23 title

Poplarville's season came to and end in the Class 4A South state finals Tuesday night.
The visiting Lady Hornets fell to Newton County 10-2 in game two of the best-of-three series. -
Lady Hornets face Newton County
Two more wins, and Poplarville will be playing for the Class 4A state championship in fast-pitch softball.
The Lady Hornets have a chance at getting that first victory today. -
Polderman’s, Mitchell win titles
The Picayune Maroon Tide and the Pearl River Central Blue Devils both competed in the Class 5A South State track and field championships this past Saturday at Long Beach High School.
