POPLARVILLE —
The Poplarville girls captured the Region 8-4A fast pitch softball title Monday night in resounding fashion.
The Lady Hornets beat visiting Forrest County AHS 15-0 in three innings to claim their third straight league crown. Poplarville is 15-6 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Head coach Jonathan Ray’s team has one league game left, as they were slated to face Bay High Tuesday night but that game was rained out. It has been rescheduled for tonight in Bay St. Louis.
“We started out 0-1 in the district, after slipping up in our first game against Greene County,” Ray said. “Winning the district championship is always a goal for us each season. But winning six straight after that first loss makes this one even more special.”
Rachel Hickman continued her dominance on the mound, as she moved to 15-2 on the season by tossing an abbreviated no-hitter against the Lady Aggies. She struck out six, and now has 156 K’s on the season.
Tristan Wheat had a pair of triples in the win, while Miranda Fazende had three hits including a triple.
Wheat drove in three runs, while Tori Fairchild, Ashton Rodgers and Fazende all had two RBI’s apiece.
The Lady Hornets won’t start the Class 4A South State playoffs until one week from Friday, April 27th.
Before that, Ray’s team will tune up for the postseason by hosting Pearl River Central on Thursday and then take on visiting Wayne County in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
I feel good about how we are playing at this point,” Ray concluded. “We played real well the past two games and we have been hitting the ball well. We just have to continue to play well every time we take the field.”
The Lady Hornets will face a yet to be determined opponent in their opening round playoff series. The state softball playoffs actually begin with the play-in round this weekend, but because they are the league champions Poplarville has a first round bye.
