CARRIERE —
The Pearl River Central Blue Devils bolted from the starting gate for the 2012 high school football season last Friday night with their 41-7 win over the Hancock Hawks at Hawk Stadium/Brett Favre Field in Kiln.
PRC head coach Eric Collins commented, “There were some very good things that came out of the Hancock win. We were able to establish some very physical play especially on defense. We were able to cover three turnovers which is big since we did not convert our first turnover last year until the third game. And, we came out of the game with no injuries. That is something you always worry about with the first game of the year. Everyone is eager to play against an opponent after practicing so long against each other. But, we were fortunate in that regard.”
Pearl River Central is open this week. The Blue Devils (1-0) received some very encouraging news about Brandon Padgett who did not play against the Hawks due to a non-football related injury. It was thought that he may have been suffering from an appendicitis; however, that was not the case and Padgett will be rejoining his team in the very near future.
Collins stated, “We go the good news that Brandon Padgett will be able to rejoin the team very soon. He brings a physical presence to the safety position for us. Brandon is also a solid cover guy for us in special teams. He is a big hitter and we are eagerly anticipating his return.”
On Friday night, the Blue Devils needed just 12 seconds to establish their dominance in the game when Terick Whitehead ran the opening kickoff of the 2012 season back 95 yards for a touchdown. Desmond Michel added an eight-yard score about ninety seconds later after the PRC defense forced a fumble on the Hawks’ first play from scrimmage. With less than two minutes off the clock, the Blue Devils were leading 14-0. Michel added his second touchdown of the night, a one-yard plunge, with about seven minutes remaining in the first half followed by an Austin Oalman 75-yard interception return that made the score 28-0 with 3:15 left in the first half.
On their first possession of the second half, the Blue Devils’ Garret Duplechain broke free for an 80-yard scoring run that pushed the score to 34-0. The final PRC score of the game came on a 16-yard aerial from Dylan Spiers to Daniel Rosine with no time left in the third quarter. Jevon Detto converted on 5-of-6 PAT attempts in the game.
The Hawks scored their lone touchdown of the game with five minutes remaining in the game when Aaron Fairley galloped 58 yards for the score.
Duplechain led PRC with 10 carries for 151 yards and a score. Steven Kubicki added 14 carries for 62 yards. Adam Perrone led the defense with eight tackles including two sacks while Oalman added five tackles along with his interception return.
Collins added, “While we did do some good things Friday night, we also made our share of mistakes. However, they are mistakes that can be corrected. We had some blown assignments on both sides of the ball. We can fix those mental errors. Studying the film and seeing where our mistakes occurred will give us the opportunity to fix those mistakes.”
The Blue Devils their open date this Friday night. The next opponent for PRC is Perry Central on August 31st on the road. The staff plans to scout Perry Central this weekend as they are breaking in a new coach.
Collins ended, “I am very pleased with the effort and the physicality. We are excited about being 1-0.”
