POPLARVILLE —
The struggles continued for both Poplarville High teams Friday night.
Homestanding Ocean Springs swept a pair of games from Poplarville, as the Hornets fell 83-35 and the Lady Hornets dropped a 48-36 decision.
The Poplarville girls gave a solid effort against the powerful Lady Greyhounds, but never were able to get over the hump. The Lady Hornets struggled a bit from the field shooting, hampering their effort to pull off a big win.
The Lady Greyhounds won their 21st victory in 23 games behind Gretchen Aucoin’s 19 points. Kendra Hall had 15 points and Bretta Hart 11 for Poplarville. The Lady Hornets lost for the sixth time in their last seven games.
Weston Bordis had 18 points as the Ocean Springs boys improved to 7-13. The Poplarvillle boys dropped their 11th straight game.
Both Poplarville teams host Bay High in league play on Tuesday.
• In Long Beach Friday night, the Picayune boys got back on the winning track beating the Bearcats 67-56 in Region 8-5A action. The Maroon Tide is now 19-4, but had lost two straight games before the win.
Da’Keith Burton had 12 points for Picayune, while Shemar Williams tallied 10 and Eric Peyton added nine to the winning cause. 11 different players scored for Picayune, which moved to 3-1 in league play.
The LBHS girls remained unbeaten in league play with a 69-61 win over the Lady Tide. Both Teela Hayes and Jasmine Ducre had 12 points apiece to pace Picayune, while Tee Myers added nine points.
The Lady Tide is 2-2 in league play. Karla Jackson poured in 22 points and dished out seven assists for LBHS, now 4-0 in region action. Both Picayune teams host West Harrison Tuesday.
• Homestanding West Harrison swept a pair of Region 8-5A games from Pearl River Central Friday night.
The Blue Devils fell 65-59, despite getting 20 points apiece from both Ashton Woodson and Dennan Seal.
The Lady Devils dropped a 57-28 decision to WHHS. Caroline Lumpkin scored 13 for PRC and Jessica Powers added 11. Both PRC teams travel to Long beach Tuesday.

Saints ready to practice with Payton again

Picayune’s magical playoff run came up just short of a spot in the state finals.
Homestanding Pascagoula, the defending Class 5A state champs, took a hard-fought 5-3 win over the Maroon Tidee in game three of the best of three South State finals here Saturday before a capacity crowd at Ingalls Field. -

The season came to an end for the Picayune baseball team Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to homestanding Pascagoula here at Ingalls Field in the third and deciding game of the Class 5A South State championship series.

showdown today at 2 p.m., at Ingalls Field for the Class A South State
prep baseball championship and the right to play for the state title. -
Wildcats tring to win Region 23 title
Host Pearl River opened Region 23 Tournament play in dominating fashion here Thursday in Wildcat Stadium, demolishing top-seeded East Central 12-1 in eight innings and now faces second-seeded LSU-Eunice (La.) in Friday’s second round at 7 p.m.

The visiting Lady Hornets fell to Newton County 10-2 in game two of the best-of-three series. -

Two more wins, and Poplarville will be playing for the Class 4A state championship in fast-pitch softball.
The Lady Hornets have a chance at getting that first victory today. -
Polderman’s, Mitchell win titles
The Picayune Maroon Tide and the Pearl River Central Blue Devils both competed in the Class 5A South State track and field championships this past Saturday at Long Beach High School.
