The Picayune Item
Bay St. Louis —
Both the boys teams from Picayune and Pearl River Central will compete today in the annual War on the Shore at St. Stanislaus High School.
The Maroon Tide, which has been off for a week since beating St. Stanislaus last week, will face D'Iberville at 4:30 while the Blue Devils take on perennial power Gulfport in the final game of the day.
The games are two of seven that comprise the yearly event taking place at Brother Peter Gymnasium.
The action kicks off with the lone girls match-up at 10:30 a.m., which pits the undefeated Bay High Lady Tigers against the once-beaten Gulfport Lady Admirals.
The game is a rematch from a few weeks back when the Lady Tigers handed the Lady Admirals their only defeat of the season.
Biloxi plays Bay High in a boys game at noon, followed by St. Stanislaus-Seminary at 1:30 p.m., Harrison Central-Madison Ridgeland Academy at 3 p.m., D'Iberville-Picayune at 4:30 p.m., Pass Christian-St. Martin at 6 p.m., and Pearl River Central-Gulfport at 7:30 p.m.
D'Iberville took on Gautier Friday night before facing Picayune today.
The Blue Devils tipped the weekend off Friday night on the road against Hancock. PRC moved to 8-4 overall with an exciting 79-76 win over the Hawks.
Dennan Seal tallied a game high 28 points for the Blue Devils, while Ashton Woodson added 18 points. Justin Boudreaux, the tight end for the PRC football team, chipped in 10 points and Seth McCoy added 9 to the winning cause.
The Blue Devils might just be getting Gulfport at a good time, if that's possible, as the Admirals are coming off a big game against arch-rival Biloxi Friday night.
Both the PRC boys and girls teams travel to Poplarville Monday night.
Also, the Hawks were the only local team to be selected to compete in the annual HoopsFest this season.
The schedule and times were announced on Thursday for the big event, which takes place next month at The Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.
The all boys line-up has some interesting match-ups; action tips off with Vancleave vs. Ocean Springs at 9:30 a.m, followed by Bay vs. D'Iberville, 11 a.m., and then Hancock vs. St. Stanislaus, 12:30 p.m. That game is followed by Pascagoula vs. Harrison Central, 2 p.m., Moss Point vs. Pass Christian, 3:30 p.m. and then St. Martin vs. West Harrison, 5 p.m.
The night session kicks off with Madison Central vs. Gulfport, 6:30 p.m. and is followed by a 3-point shootout and a slam dunk contest at 8. The final game of HoopsFest is Biloxi vs. Jackson Callaway, 8:30 p.m.
Advance tickets are $7 and are available at any participating school. Tickets are $9 at the Coliseum box office on game day.
