Local players named 5A All-State

JACKSON — This year’s Class 5A All-State football team has a definite Pearl River County flavor.

Eleven local players were named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-State football teams recently, including five to the first-team.

Selected as first team all-state performers are Picayune running back Preston Dedeaux, fullback Desmond Taylor and offensive lineman Joey Reynolds as well as Pearl River Central offensive lineman Blaise Benoit and linebacker Adam Perronne.

Picked on the second team were Picayune tight end Tanner Bryan, running back Doug Cross and center Jacob Feeley and Pearl River Central offensive lineman Harry Godwin, kicker Jevon Detto and linebacker Brandon Padgett.

Dedeaux, Detto and Godwin are all juniors while the other eight local players are seniors.

Picayune, which was coming off a state championship last year, was the consensus number one team in the state of Mississippi for most of the season before being upset by Pascagoula in the Class 5A South State semifinals.

PRC lost in the Class 5A South State finals for the second straight season, and was ranked number two in Class 5A for most of the second half of the season.

Pascagoula placed three players on the 5A first-team: safety Brandon Rich, kicker Grant Warren and long-snapper Bobby Daggett. The Panthers went 11-3 and lost to Starkville 28-11 in the state title game.

The Panther trio of quarterback Stacey Warren, wide receiver Breland Hoye and defensive lineman Jawan Collins were selected to the All-State second team.

Individual 5A awards were Starkville quarterback Gabe Myles (offensive player of the year), Oxford defensive back Xavier Pegues (defensive player of the year) and Starkville's Jamie Mitchell (coach of the year).

Homestanding Pascagoula, the defending Class 5A state champs, took a hard-fought 5-3 win over the Maroon Tidee in game three of the best of three South State finals here Saturday before a capacity crowd at Ingalls Field.

The season came to an end for the Picayune baseball team Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to homestanding Pascagoula here at Ingalls Field in the third and deciding game of the Class 5A South State championship series.

The visiting Lady Hornets fell to Newton County 10-2 in game two of the best-of-three series.
