District play begins again

BAY ST. LOUIS — All three Pearl River County prep baseball teams return to action tonight in district play.

Both Picayune and Pearl River Central travel to Jackson County, as the Maroon Tide heads to Hurley to face East Central and the Blue Devils travel to Moss Point to meet the Tigers. Meanwhile, Poplarville hosts Greene County in Division 8-4A play.

Both Picayune and Poplarville are coming off wins over the weekend, as the Maroon Tide beat St. Stanislaus 7-1 and the Hornets beat Stone County 7-6 in eight innings.

For Picayune, Devin Hedgepeth picked up the win and Dylan Breaux hurled a scoreless seventh inning. Nick Marble, Kyle Dillard and Dalton Hedgepeth all had two hits apiece for the Tide in the winning effort, helping Picayune overcome an early 1-0 lead by the Rock-A-Chaws and pull out the win on the road.

In Poplarville, Hayden Freeman picked up the win for the Hornets over the Tomcats, striking out five in four frames of work. J.J. Welch had two hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs as well while Blake Ladner had two hits and two RBI's as well. Justin Oliver chipped in a pair of hits and Austin Smith recorded a triple and Zac Houston added a double to the winning effort.

Meanwhile, Pearl River Central is coming off a pair of losses on Saturday as the Blue Devils dropped a doubleheader at Hancock.

The Hawks took a hard-fought 8-7 win in 12 innings in the opener, and then the home team bombed PRC 11-1 in the nightcap.

Chase Fagen was the winning pitcher in game one, and he along with Nico Wilson both had three hits apiece while Zach O'Hern and Jeb Malley had two hits each. Cody Lee took the loss for PRC.

In game two, Michael Schubert got the win and Cody Miller took the  loss.. Hunter Waltman had three hits for Hancock, while O'Hern, Schubert and Wilson all had two hits apiece in the winning cause. The Hawks scored seven runs in the fourth to break open the game.

At the plate for PRC, Dylan Spiers had three hits and drove in three runs on the day, while Lane Fazende had three hits including a pair of doubles in the two losses.

    Homestanding Pascagoula, the defending Class 5A state champs, took a hard-fought 5-3 win over the Maroon Tidee in game three of the best of three South State finals here Saturday before a capacity crowd at Ingalls Field.

    The season came to an end for the Picayune baseball team Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to homestanding Pascagoula here at Ingalls Field in the third and deciding game of the Class 5A South State championship series.

     showdown today at 2 p.m., at Ingalls Field for the Class A South State
     prep baseball championship and the right to play for the state title.

     Host Pearl River opened Region 23 Tournament play in dominating fashion here Thursday in Wildcat Stadium, demolishing top-seeded East Central 12-1 in eight innings and now faces  second-seeded LSU-Eunice (La.) in Friday’s second round at 7 p.m.
