CARRIERE —
Pearl River Central Blue Devil quarterback Dylan Spiers passed for three touchdowns, including two aerial bombs, and fullback Steven Kubicki ran 76 yards on eight carries and scored two TDs, one on a pass from Spiers, to pace the Devils to a 49-0 win over the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars of Gretna, La., at Hendrix Memorial Stadium on Friday night before a packed home stands.
Spiers hit five out of 10 passing attempts for 151 yards in the air on the night.
Backup QB sophomore Terek Whitehead also rushed for 66 yards on two scrambles, one for 34 yards and a touchdown in the last score of the game in the fourth quarter.
The PRC win Friday night left the Devils at 3-0 and ranked No. 5 in the state 5A AP poll, as the Devils face top-ranked Picayune, also 3-0 and ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, in a crucial clash Friday night at Hendrix Stadium. It’s a district contest and counts, the first for both.
The stage is now set for one of the most important clashes in Mississippi prep football next Friday.
The Devil offense and defense have trounced opponents in their first three games, averaging 48 points a game on offense and only giving up 14 points in three games on defense, shutting out the Jaguars on Friday. Although Devil head coach Eric Collins, who has performed a miracle turn-around here in two years, did not overlook the challenge from the two Louisiana teams his Devils faced; they easily dispatched both teams, Grace King and Thomas Jefferson, after trouncing Hancock in the season opener.
There was no doubt that after Friday night's game, Picayune was on Collins' mind, and coaches from both Picayune and PRC are focusing in on Friday’s game with laser beams.
In post-game comments, Collins said, "We cleaned up some problems we faced on the special teams after the two-week layoff, and our kids paid a lot more attention to details which are so important in football, and we are looking forward to the game with Picayune." Collins said the Devils are what he calls “focused.”
He said a two-week layoff had affected the Blue Devil attention to details and some special team aspects were “sloppy.” The layoff was caused by Hurricane Isaac, and caused Picayune to miss two weeks also.
Jaguars head coach Kevin Kelly said the Jaguar program was in a rebuilding mode. "We have got some good kids, and they are coming along well. We will have a good season as we mature," he said. The loss to PRC left the Jaguars 1-1.
On Friday, the Blue Devils carried a 28-0 lead into the half-time break. They had scored 21 points in the first quarter and seven in the second. The Jaguars threatened to close the gap twice in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on two good drives.
The only Jaguar TD of the game was nullified when the Jaguar receiver was called for offensive pass interference in the end zone.
Blue Devil scoring went this way:
Capping a seven-play, 56-yard drive at 8:58 in the first period, running back Garret Duplechain scored on a five-yard run, drawing first blood. Kicker Jevon Detto's kick for the PAT was good; he hit every extra point, except one kicked by Lance Fazende.
Next Spiers hit Kubicki on an 11-yard pass-play for the Devils' second score with 5:35 left in the first stanza. The TD capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive.
And with four minutes left in first-period action, Spiers hit tight end Justin Boudreaux on a pass play covering 53 yards for PRC's third TD.
Three minutes into second period action, Spiers hit wide receiver Daniel Rosine for his second bomb of the night on a 54-yard TD pass. Rosine pulled in a high arching pass on about the Jaguar 30 and raced to the end zone. The drive covered 94 yards in three plays.
PRC scored two TDs in the third period and one in the fourth to round out its 49 points for the night.
Kubicki scored on a four-yard run three minutes into the third, and Dalton Padgett on a 16-yard dash with one minute left in the third.
PRC's final score came with 8:31 left in the game in an electrifying 34-yard dash by Whitehead. He was bottled up in the backfield while attempting to pass, broke out to his right and tight-walked the sidelined to the end zone and the last TD of the night, making it 49-0. For the night Whitehead gained 66 yards on two scrambles.
The Jaguars’ best drive of the night came in the waning minutes of the first period when QB Jheren Love put together an 11-play, 50-yard drive. Love hit Isiah Williams on a 19-yard pass in the end zone but the TD was nullified on offensive pass interference.
The penalty put the Jaguars on the Devil 10. From there Love hit Williams on the four, and on 4th and goal from the four Devil linebacker Adam Peronne sacked Love on the six to kill the best threat of the night from the Jaguars.
