OCEAN SPRINGS —
Picayune enjoyed its best season in school history last season, losing only a pair of games in 15 outings en route to winning the Class 5A state championship.
On Friday, the Maroon Tide gets its first chance at avenging one of those two losses. The Maroon Tide, ranked number one in 5A, travels to Ocean Springs to face the Greyhounds. Kickoff time at Greyhound Stadium/Hugh Pepper Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
Last season the Greyhounds handed Picayune its only home loss of the season in a 17-15 defeat. "They have a very good football team again" veteran Maroon Tide head coach Dodd Lee, whose team is 2-0, said. "Their quarterback is very good. He may be the best we will see all season long."
The Greyhounds are 1-1, after smacking Gautier 46-26 in the season opener before falling on a last second field goal 17-14 to Pascagoula. Neither team has played in two weeks, after having games cancelled two weeks ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Issac as well as both having scheduled open dates last week. In their last outing against Pascagoula, the Greyhounds led 14-0 before the Panthers rallied for 17 second half points to pull out the win. Ocean Springs is led on offense by quarterback Wes Windham and receiver Ishmael Morrow. "We beat them at their place, and I'm sure they remember that," second year OSHS head coach Ryan Ross said. "We've got a monster coming in here Friday, and we need to match their physicality. We need to get more physical. They look like they are better than they were last year, and they won the state championship last year."
The Maroon Tide has rushed for almost 1,000 yards in just two games, while the Greyhounds like to run more of a spread offense and throw the ball around a little more. It will be a match-up of contrasting styles. The 15 points Picayune scored against OSHS last year was the lowest point total of the season for the Maroon Tide.
This will be the first game between the two teams in Ocean Springs since 1994, when the Greyhounds beat Picayune 20-10 and the Maroon Tide went on to a 1-10 season.
In fact, Ocean Springs has won seven straight regular season games over Picayune, dating back to 17-6 win in 1989, and seven of eight overall. The only Maroon Tide win in that span was a 44-14 win at home over OSHS in the first round of the 2003 Class 5A state playoffs. And, Picayune has lost five consecutive games in Ocean Springs, dating back to a 41-10 win in 1986. That year was the last time the Maroon Tide won the state championship, until last season.
