PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. —
After beginning the season 0-2, Poplarville heads to its off week with a break even record.
The Hornets jumped all over homestanding Pass Christian Friday night, taking a 41-0 lead in the third quarter and coasting to a 47-20 win at Joe McDonald Stadium.
The win makes Poplarville 2-2 on the season, while the Pirates are 0-3. The Hornets have an open date next week before hosting Lumberton one week from Friday.
The Hornets rushed for over 500 yards in the win, with a quartet of players; Malik Lucas, J.J. Welch, Rojaie Raine and Keith Dotson, all breaking the 100-yard mark.
Lucas was the star against the Pirates, as he rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns. His 78-yard scoring scamper less than four minutes into the game gave the Hornets a lead they would never relinquish.
Lucas added a 10-yard touchdown run with :10 seconds left in the opening quarter to make it 14-0. He then broke free on a 52-yard scoring jaunt just before halftime that made it 20-0 at intermission.
Raine joined the scoring parade early in the second half, as he scampered 88-yards to paydirt on the second play of the third frame and the Hornets had a comfortable 27-0 lead.
Minutes later, on Poplarville's next possession, Welch picked up most of the yardage on a 66-yard drive but Lucas capped it with a 5-yard touchdown plunge to make it 34-0.
But Welch would be rewarded for his work, as he scored on a 21-yard run with just over two minutes to play in the period and it was 41-0 Hornets entering the final period.
After the Pirates scored on three touchdown passes against the Hornets reserves, Poplarville's Keith Dotson ended the game with a 45-yard touchdown run on the final play.
Dotson rushed for 123 yards, Raine 102 yards and Welch 101 yards for the Hornets in the big victory.
The Hornets defense was big as well in the early going, coming up with five turnovers that the offense converted into four scores. Welch, Brandon McBride and Drake Hodges all had interceptions, while John Scribba recovered a fumble as well.
Hayden Pounds was good on four extra points attempts.
