A New Attitude: To Recovery

PICAYUNE — As leader for a Christ centered drug and alcohol recovery group since 2003, I have been given many an opinion on using the word “recovery” to represent our group. Having the inquisitive “gotta know” type mind that I have been blessed with, many years ago I delved into what the word “recovery” means.

According to Webster’s, recovery is: a regaining of something lost or stolen; a return to health, consciousness, etc…; a regaining of balance, control, composure etc... I don’t know about you, but I believe this is a great word to describe what it’s like to be free from addiction.

The leaders of the “My New Life Now” group have been blessed to see many who desired freedom from drug and alcohol use to regain, attain and maintain “recovery”. Adult people (18 years and up) of all ages and backgrounds have been coming together since 2003 at Resurrection Life Church to attend these meetings.  People such as: those struggling with addiction, in recovery (already clean), the family of the addicted seeking support/encouragement, felons, those on house arrest, parole, exiting rehab or jail — the list goes on and on. We welcome anyone from inside and outside our community who has a desire to be free to join.

“A New Attitude: To Recovery” curriculum, a study of Christ’s Beatitudes (for famliy and those dealing with addiction) is the topic of the group beginning January 30th at RLM. Both groups will deal with many of the negative attitudes, such as: pride and its consequences, lack of self control/rebellion, unforgiveness, etc, etc… that affects the life of the addicted and their families. Even better than that are the new healthy attitudes we will be teaching and encouraging participants to begin exchanging for the old ones. We will discuss new attitudes such as: humility, desperateness, obedience, courage and many others.

While attending group, participants will learn real and relevant lessons from the Bible, focusing on the “attitudes” that lead to a blessed life. Christ was so sure of this that with every attitude He spoke He began it with the words “Blessed are…” It has been proven through countless lives that these “attitudes” work and that the man/woman, who adopts and uses them in their life, will surely be blessed.

RLM “My New Life Now” family support group will be meeting on Mondays also. This group is open to the immediate (adult) family of the addicted whose life is being negatively impacted by their loved ones problem. We also invite family members who are having trouble adjusting their attitudes to a loved one’s newly found recovery (sobriety). Family such as: grandparents, parents, siblings, children, spouses etc… are invited. “A New Attitude: To Recovery” curriculum will be taught but the focus will be on the family themselves, not the addict. The goal of this group is not to try and figure out what is wrong with the addict (others), but to help the family to recognize and deal with their ways and attitudes which may be allowing others to negatively affect and control the outcome of their lives (and vice/versa). Through teaching, testimonies, support and encouragement the aim is to help family regain their “Recovery” so they can live out a full, purposeful and peaceful life.

The “A New Attitude: To Recovery” main group will focus on those seeking recovery and support. Our main goal is to share hope for freedom from addiction with real/relevant principles and steps to breaking the cycle of use, abuse, chaos, consequences, regret, guilt, temporary sobriety only to use again.  One of the most wonderful things about “attitude” is that it is always able to be changed.  Along with the New Life Leaders, participants will look at God’s word and hopefully discover those areas of their “attitude” that need changing.

So no matter what your attitude is right now we would like to extend an invitation to you to join us this semester as we delve into the mind and attitudes of Christ.  If you know someone needing this group please cut out this article and give it to them.

Always remember, “Your attitude is the first thing people see when they meet you.” Orientation and signup for both Life Groups will be on January 30th at 5:45 in the RLM Children’s Building located at 795 Memorial Blvd./ Suite H in Picayune. Atmosphere is casual, must show up to sign up. Call 601-798-4511 for more information.

  • A journey from fear to faith

By Gwen “Ms. Chocolate” Williams/Special to the Item
I am convinced that satan’s most powerful weapon is fear. In this land of the free and the home of the brave most are held in bondage by fear. Because of what Jesus did on the cross we are set free to live abundantly, but fear teaches us to trust our common sense rather than trust God. I wonder what my life would have been had I been taught the love of God rather than the fear of God. I lived most of my childhood in fear of what God would do if I did something wrong. Praise God, I’ve learned to walk by faith living victoriously.
