Local Boy Scout Troop visit Philmont Scout Ranch

PICAYUNE — Members of Boy Scout Troop 2 of Picayune, chartered by First United Methodist Church, recently went on a life changing trip through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Philmont covers 214 square miles of vast wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet.

While at Philmont, the troop had scouts and leaders enrolled in several different programs.

Allen Diez (Life Scout), Korey Kingrey (Eagle Scout), and Will Wise (Life Scout) attended National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is an exciting program where young men enhance their leadership skills in the Philmont Backcountry. Scouts expand upon the team building and ethical decision making skills learned in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), which is a prerequisite before attending NAYLE. NAYLE uses elements of the Philmont Ranger Training as well as advanced Search and Rescue skills to teach leadership, teamwork and the lessons of selfless service. NAYLE offers Scouts an unforgettable backcountry wilderness experience where they live leadership and teamwork, using the core elements of NYLT to make their leadership skills intuitive.

Clark Crosby (Eagle Scout), Logan Gravois(Life Scout) and Kyle Gravois (Life Scout) carried everything they needed to survive their over 50 mile trek on their backs while hiking from camp to camp. They participated in backcountry programs along the way including rock climbing, horseback riding and gold prospecting. The trek included a conservation project where the Scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem. Along, the trek, Scouts endured tough challenges including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often-inclement weather. “They may meet only one other group of Scouts on the trail in an entire day of hiking,” according to Backpacker Magazine. “Even in the most crowded destinations, each Scout group camps in isolation, out of sight and sound of all other groups.”

These boys made what amounts to a Scouting pilgrimage with their trip to Philmont.

Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s premier high adventure camp and the largest youth camp in the world serving nearly one million participants since 1939.

Scoutmaster Keith Kingrey, Assistant Scoutmaster Keith Gravois and Assistant Scoutmaster Taylor Wagner took the course “Putting More Outing in Scouting” at the Philmont Training Center. It was a high-energy conference that spent more time in the outdoors than the classroom (as all Scouting SHOULD be!) They experienced unique, time-and-youth-tested ideas in unit outdoor program; including the importance of a child/nature connection, why outdoor program attracts and retains youth, hikes and campouts with a purpose, C.O.P.E., conservation projects, planning a quality program, and more.
