PICAYUNE —
Mary Katherine “Kathy” Porter-Carter’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 1, 2012 with a memorial service beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a celebration at 11 a.m. at Weems Chapel United Methodist Church in Picayune, Miss.
Mary began her new life with our Heavenly Father on Monday, November 26, 2012. She is reunited now with her loving parents, Eddie and Katherine Porter.
Mary was born February 5, 1952 in Hattiesburg, Miss. She was one of the first African Americans to graduate from Picayune Memorial High School in 1970. Mary attended the University of Southern Mississippi. She worked several years as a secretary and mentor in the Petal and Picayune School Districts where she became well known among the students that she loved and mentored daily. She also worked for Arcata at NASA where she volunteered often with Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics.
Mary was a loyal and devoted member of Weems Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught KFC (Kids For Christ) and Sunday School. She served on several district and conference levels in the United Methodist Church. She loved her church and traveled all over the United States attending meetings and conferences as a United Methodist Woman.
Mary is now an angel in heaven looking over her husband Alvin N. Carter; two sons, Christopher (Debrorah) Carter and Alvin F. (Leslie) Carter; one daughter, Deidra (LaMar) Thompson; one sister, LaNita Thomas; and five brothers: Lloyd Jones, Robert (Margo) Porter, Ray (Belinda) Porter, Charles (Gretchen) Porter, and Ronald Porter; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Burial will be at Parker Chapel Cemetery in Cybur, Miss.
Baylous Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
