Gunnery Sgt. George Franklin James was born on February 22, 1935, to the late Henry and Emma James. On Christmas Eve, Monday, December 25, 2012, God called this old soldier home to a land that is free from sickness, sorrow, pain and death.
At an early age, George joined the Marine Corps in 1952 and served 20 years, 2 months and 20 days. He retired in January 1973. He worked a few years after leaving the Marine Corps, as a truck driver with United Van Lines in Oceanside, Calif. He moved back to Mississippi in 1979. George loved farming and raising animals.
George was preceded in death by: his father, Deacon Henry James, Sr.; his mother, Sister Emma James; three brothers, Arthur, Freddie and Henry James, Jr.; and six sisters, Hattie B. James, Ruth James Franklin, Evelyn Newkirk, Gloria Jean James, Elzie Collins, and Edna Oliver.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Lula B. James; a son, Matthew James of Catahoula, Miss.; a daughter, Barbara A. (Ivory) Lyons of Alliance, Ohio; two grandchildren, Jared Lyons and Rachel Lyons; two foster children, Joseph Bell and Terence May; one brother, Roger (Sarah) James of Catahoula; one sister, Ann Barnett of Columbia, Md.; two brothers-in-law, Russell (Lollie) Foster of Indianapolis, Ind., and John T. Newkirk of Catahoula, husband of his late sister Evelyn; also an extended family—daughters, Sue (John Overbey and Pattie Hageman; and children Jason and Gretchey (Callier) Overbey; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Home, 1011 Rosa Street, Picayune, Miss. George will be laid to rest on Monday, December 31, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m., with graveside burial at the Biloxi National Cemetery, VA in Biloxi, 400 Veterans Avenue, Biloxi, MS 39531.
The Rev. Kevin Hart will officiate.
