PICAYUNE —
Barbara Camille Winters Reid, 69, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at her home near Picayune, Miss. The celebration of Barbara’s life will be Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Goodyear Blvd., Picayune, MS.
She is survived by: her husband, Clarence B. Reid Jr.; daughters Allison Kerkhoff of Indian Trail, N.C., and Erin Reid of San Marcos, Texas; sisters, Ann Beagles of Beaulah, Fla., Nancy Dameron of Martinsville, Ind., and Debbie Malmberg of Milton, Fla.; a brother, Donald Winters of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three grandsons, Dylan, Casey and Hayden Kerkhoff of Indian Trail.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eugene V. and Charlene Lane Winters.
A native of Houston, Texas, Barbara was a lifelong educator. She received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Florida State University and her master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught in the public schools of Pensacola and Jacksonville, Fla., and, in New Orleans, La., at Kennedy, Eleanor McMain Magnet and Ben Franklin high schools. She was a former language department chair at Franklin. She also worked on academic accreditation committees.
After Hurricane Katrina, she taught at Slidell High, the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast campus and Nunez Community College in Chalmette.
During her long teaching career, she received many grants for additional study, including a Rockefeller grant to study in the Canary Islands the decimas sung by the Islenos of Louisiana.
Among her many interests were classical music and playing her flute. She was a former member of and one-time president of the New Orleans Civic Symphony.
Barbara was a former member of the Altar Guild at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans and was a lay reader at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Picayune.
She moved to Picayune in 1999 after living in New Orleans for 23 years. She was loved by and will be missed by her many friends.
Her remains will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Episcopal Diocese in Haiti.
