PICAYUNE — Bowie, Sue Goolsby, 83, affectionately called “Mama Sue”, born New Albany, Miss., and a longtime resident of Picayune, Miss., for past 33 years, passed away peacefully the evening of Friday, January 4, 2013, from Alzheimer’s at Sunrise Senior Living Center, Baton Rouge, La.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, James Elwin Bowie of Picayune, currently residing in Baton Rouge.

Mama Sue and Pop met and married while attending Ole Miss. Mama Sue was beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, master quilter, cake decorator and friend. Mama Sue had a strong personal faith in Christ that shaped her devotion and service to family, students and friends.

Predeceased by: parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Earl (Nannie Pearl Hill) Goolsby; sister, Miss Peggy E. Goolsby, New Albany; and infant son: Marvin Theo Bowie.

Surviving children and spouses: Dr. and Mrs. James E. (Karen Miles) Bowie, Jr. of Lafayette, La., Dr. and Mrs. Roger Earl (Deborah Dugan) Bowie of Covington, La., Dr. Sally Bowie and Dr . Nelson P. Daly of Baton Rouge. Surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Miss. Lesley Wolfe of Baton Rouge, Miss. Elizabeth J. Bowie of New Orleans, La., Mr. and Mrs. James Anthony (Laura Bowie) Lamar of Birmingham, Ala., Mr. Roger E. Bowie, Jr. of New Orleans, Mr. James William Bowie of Covington, Major (USMC) and Mrs. David (Krista Bowie) Ickles and Alyssa Grace, Joshua James, Garrett Heinrich, and Haley Angelle of Cairo, Egypt, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron (Sarah Bowie) Francois and Michael Lloyd of Winchester, Va., and Miss. Julia Nan Bowie of Lafayette.

Special thanks to Charlotte Cockerham, caregiver and friend during her last illness, as well as other friends and caregivers through the years.

Organizations/Hobbies/Interests/Education: New Albany High School, New Albany, Miss., University of Mississippi, B.A. Education, University of Missouri-Rolla, studies towards Master of Education. Career Secondary School Educator English and Social Studies, Adult Education Teacher, Cake Decorating and Quilting Member and Sunday School Teacher, First Baptist Church, Picayune, Miss.

Funeral flowers will be provided by the family.

Visiting will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802, Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 10 a.m. until religious services at 12 noon in the funeral home chapel conducted by Father Trey Nelson. Interment will follow in Louisiana National Cemetery.
