Myra Ellan Sones Gimble, 77, died peacefully of leukemia on Saturday, October 27, 2012 in Tyler, Texas.
Myra was born July 4, 1935, in Sones Chapel, Miss., daughter of the late Harvey Harren Sones, Sr. and Bonnie Mae Bodie Sones. In 1953 she graduated from McNeill High School as Valedictorian. She was best remembered for her singing voice, which led to her having her own radio program on WRJW in Picayune, Miss. Myra attended Pearl River Community College on a music scholarship, where she was a member of the original half-time dancing performers now known as the String of Pearls. She also attended the University of Southern Mississippi and taught Music Education classes at Picayune Jr. High School. After marrying and moving to Atlanta, Ga., she graduated in 1961 from Georgia State University. While attending Georgia State University with Ray Stevens, who was trying to get his music career started, Myra sang back-up on his first recordings. Majoring in voice and minoring in piano, Myra not only was a talented singer, but also a gifted pianist. She played in many churches, as well as other venues.
Born on July 4, she was affectionately known as that “little red-headed firecracker”. A dedicated mother, her children were her life; but she also loved other people, especially the underdog. People seemed drawn to her and complete strangers would tell her their life stories. Myra will be remembered for unconditional love of family and friends. A good listener, she celebrated your victories and after your defeats, she was there for support. Her advice was “no matter what, try to have yourself a little fun each day.” If you ever received a card from Myra, it would always be signed “Lots of Love, Prayers and Angels.” As “mother/big sis” to her two youngest siblings and also with her own children, she gave lots of love, said many prayers and is now with the angels. Our loss is Heaven’s gain!
Myra is survived by: her husband of 55 years, Alexander Forbes Gimble of Tyler; her children, Alexa Ellan Gimble Murray (Lee) of Tyler, Stephanie Elaine Gimble of Irving, Texas and Alexander Bruce Gimble of Austin, Texas; brother, Stephen Bodie Sones (Micki) of Sones Chapel; and sister Bonnie Elaine Sones Carter (Eddie) of Burnside, Ky.; nephews, Benjamin Sones (Kay) of Hereford, Ariz. and James Edward Harren Carter (Carrie) of Lexington, Ky.; great-nephews and great-nieces, Alex Sones, Connie Sones, Jeannie Sones, Stephen Sones, Sarah Sones of Hereford and Christy Ann Carter of Lexington; special aunt, Laura B. Sones of Sones Chapel; many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Myra was predeceased by: her grandparents, James Quitman Sones and Alma Ball Sones, Charles Jefferson Bodie and Ella Lumpkin Bodie; and her brothers, Harren Elliott Sones and Harvey Harren Sones, Jr.
A graveside service will be held at Sones Chapel Baptist Church cemetery on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 1 p.m.
Because of Myra’s love of children, a Memorial Fund has been established for the Children’s Ministry of Mosaic Lexington Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mosaic Lexington, P. O. Box 55706, Lexington, KY 40555, ATTN: Pastor Jimmy Carter.
