Funeral services for James Walter Parker Jr., 57, and Mary “Alix” Alexandra Zulick Parker, 65, of Smithfield, Va., who passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012, will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 at 1 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be Friday, January 4, 2013 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home. Burial will be in Log Town Cemetery under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home.
The Rev. James Fornea will officiate the service.
James was a native of New Orleans, La. He was a member of the New Orleans Fire Department for 21 years and he retired in 2004. From 2005 to 2011, he served as a Security/Medic in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Alix was a native of Rocky Mount, N.C. She was a singer/songwriter and a lyricist working in Los Angeles and Norway. She was known for her love of animals and her outgoing charismatic and loving personality. Alix and James lived in Slidell, La., and they were married for 24 years.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James Walter Sr. and Bettie Fornea Parker. Alix was preceded in death by her parents, Philip D. and Catharine B. Wall Zulick. James and Alix also lost their son, Kristian E. Parker.
Survivors include: their son, James Walter Parker, III and his wife Angela; their two daughters, Elizabeth Parker Veverka and her husband Patrick and Jamie P. Hughes-Gilly and her husband David; four grandchildren, Madelyn Gilly, Makayla Parker, Parker Veverka, and Kellen Veverka. James is survived by: his two brothers, Jesse Parker and his wife Marilyn and Reginald Parker and his wife Connie; and his two sisters, Nettie Parker Bauman and her husband Steve and Judy Parker Talley. Alix is survived by: her brother, Philip D. Zulick and his wife Christine; and her sister, Natalie Wall Zulick.
