PICAYUNE —
Four separate cases over the past several weeks led to the arrest of six suspects on drug related charges by the Picayune Police Department.
The first arrest occurred on July 26, just after 2 p.m. when narcotics officers stopped a gray Ford Taurus after seeing it leave a home they had been watching for months, said Capt. Chad Dorn.
As the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, driven by 58-year-old Brenda Kennedy of 1300 Osborn Rd., she refused to stop and the officers noticed it appeared as though she was putting objects in her mouth and drinking from a glass in an attempt to get rid of evidence.
Kennedy had to be forcefully removed from the vehicle after she was stopped and officers could see a Lortab, Adderall and three Dilaudid (prescription pain reliever) pills sitting on the passenger seat. Kennedy was taken into custody and the officers went to the home to speak to the residents, who advised Kennedy was at their home attempting to sell them narcotics, Dorn said.
Kennedy was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1,500 feet of a church, running a stop sign, reckless driving, failure to yield to blue lights, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest by fighting, Dorn said.
The next arrest took place on Aug. 2, just before 6 p.m. when investigators conducted an undercover operation to purchase four Lortabs from a home at 316 A. Moody St. The resident, 50-year-old Tina Joles, was charged with sale of a controlled substance after the transaction took place, Dorn said.
On Aug. 3, at about 7:45 p.m. a community member contacted the police department about a text they had received to their new phone number, the police captain said. Dorn said the text advertised Oxycodone for sale. Investigators used that information to set up a buy/bust at a local business, but when the vehicle approached the meeting point, the driver attempted to leave the area after apparently detecting the presence of officers, Dorn said.
The vehicle was stopped by the investigators with a father and daughter inside the vehicle, 61-year-old Steve White and 24-year-old Jennifer White, both of 314 Vaughn St., Dorn said. Investigators searched the vehicle and found a bottle of Oxycodone pills under the driver’s seat and the cell phone used to initiate the transaction, Dorn said. He said the two suspects were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
On Aug. 13, officers were sent to a domestic dispute at 213 Jarrell St., just after 7 p.m., Dorn said. When they arrived they spoke with 20-year-old Orion Malley and 18-year-old Victoria Becker who were involved in a dispute as to whether Malley had taken some of Becker’s money, Dorn said.
After Malley said he had not taken Becker’s money, Becker told officers that Malley was growing marijuana inside the house, Dorn said. Malley admitted to growing the marijuana but showed officers a video on his cell phone of Becker retrieving several plastic bags of a green leafy substance from a closet, Dorn said. Consent to search the home was acquired and officers found a small amount of loose marijuana, a plant grow starter kit, a bag of plant food along with other items used to grow plants indoors, including an aluminum lamp, the police captain said. Dorn said officers also found a couple of small seedlings that were too small to test. Officers also found $364 in cash and a .22 caliber rifle.
Both were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
