POPLARVILLE —
The school board for the Poplarville Special Municipal Separate School District was recognized by Supt. Carl Merritt for its service, and four teachers, representing the district’s four main schools, were recognized and honored as Teachers of the Year at the board’s Monday night meeting in the lower elementary auditorium.
The overall district Teacher of the Year was named from the four representing the individual schools.
Merritt said lower elementary teacher Cindy Sutfin was named the district’s Teacher of the Year. She was the lower elementary’s teacher of the year. She was honored with a special certificate by Merritt.
Others receiving teacher of the year honors and certificates from Merritt representing their respective schools, were for the high school Jarrett Windham, middle school (junior high) Jill Melton and the upper elementary Marissa Lee.
In awarding each school board member with a certificate of appreciation in conjunction with school board appreciation month, Merritt praised the board.
“We are fortunate to have a dedicated board that is responsive to the needs of the teaching staff here and the administrators. I appreciate the support they give me,” said Merritt.
Board members are President Violine Jordan, Vice President Samuel Gentry, Secretary Shirline Magee and members Lisa Graves and Tommy Strahan.
The Poplarville school board members are all appointed, three members by supervisors and two by the city board of aldermen.
The school system is designated a separate municipal district and takes in large rural areas surrounding the city of Poplarville. The large district butts up against the Pearl River County district near McNeill, stretches to the Lumberton line school district in northern Pearl River County and to the Stone County line in the east and Washington Parish, La., in the west.
On another matter, the board reviewed the school district audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, and Merritt said the district had received an “unqualified opinion” from auditors, the highest commendation available on audits. He said the reason for that was because of the efforts of finance director Samantha Sandifer.
Sandifer, in reviewing the audit with the board, said that a copy of the audit is sent to the state, which is required by law, and she told board members “basically the system is in good financial health.” She said the gross budget figure was currently at $17.3 million and had shrunk some because of fewer federal and state grants coming into the system.
“We had an ‘unqualified opinion’, which is the best you can get, and basically means you have no issues or problems in the system,” said Sandifer. She said if the board wanted to conduct an in-depth study of the audit, she would schedule a “work session” with the board to answer any questions or concerns they might have, regarding the audit.
“We did very well on this audit,” she said.
