PICAYUNE —
Annexation of new areas into the city limits of Picayune will be official on Wednesday, so the city will be holding a public meeting the day before to allow those residents and businesses to have some questions and concerns addressed.
The meeting will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at city hall on Beech Street and will allow newly annexed residents and businesses to gather information on when fire, police and utility services will begin or how they will be handled, said City Operations Director Harvey Miller.
Miller said the meeting is being held during the day so department heads can be on-hand to answer questions. City council members and the mayor also have been invited to attend to answer questions and welcome the new residents. City Manager Jim Luke added that the daytime scheduling of the meeting also will allow city attorney Nathan Farmer to be present to answer any legal questions.
Luke said this annexation is probably one of the largest annexations the city has made in decades. According to maps released during the annexation process, the newly annexed land will encompass areas along Interstate 59 from the Nicholson exit to the Carriere exit, among other areas. A map of the annexed areas can be downloaded from the city’s web page at http://www.picayune.ms.us/index.htm. Look for the link entitled “Annexation Map” on the left side of the screen, highlighted in yellow. A “.pdf” application, such as Adobe Reader, will be required to view the document.
