PICAYUNE —
Community members across Picayune are invited to attend the annual National Night Out Against Crime, set for Tuesday at the Picayune Criminal Justice Center on Main Street.
The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. and include activities for children to enjoy, such as fun jumpers and games. Capt. Theresa Milar said the event also will feature hot dogs and other refreshments.
City residents also can take this opportunity to meet the police officers that enforce the law day and night.
Historically, the event took place in August, but Milar said the date was moved to hold the event on a cooler night, and also to allow council members and the mayor a chance to attend. In the past ,the event involved officers touring the streets and stopping in groups at neighborhoods and churches to greet community members and make the law enforcement agency’s presence known to those who might break the law.
However, budget cutbacks have prompted the department to hold the event at the Criminal Justice Center to avoid the additional expense of overtime and for fuel.

Ex-Picayune bank teller gets prison time for fraud
Former Picayune bank teller Vonetta Jordan has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for bank fraud and ordered to repay over $117,000.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden also ordered two years of probation after her release from prison. -
